A friend just got engaged after dating for 12 years.

They started dating when they were both already adults (it’s not like they started ‘dating’ at age 15 or anything…).

Like, when is it my time…and what if he changes his mind next year and we aren’t together.

I’ll have wasted all that time with someone that I thought I’d be spending the rest of my life with.

Instead of convincing him to get married, I had only convinced him that I cared more about marriage than about him. It took a long time to arrive at a happy conclusion.

And by doing so, I made him into an object of judgment and comparison. But here are some things that I learned through my experience and through many friends who have shared this struggle.

Men feel there is nothing wrong with continuing to date since both of you are "having a good time." Many women are unaware of this dating element with men and end up staying too long in a relationship that is going nowhere.I didn't want him to feel pressured, and I don't really believe in ultimatums.I guess I was just hoping he would bring up the topic himself at some point, but nothing, not even one word.I’ve been dating my bf for about 8yrs now; in July, he’s aware that I’m ready for marriage, and he’s talked about it with me; very minimally though. I don’t want to bring it up for fear that I’m pushing an issue that he’s just not ready to confront. I don’t want a huge wedding, I want it to be personal; a getaway with our parents and siblings if they can make it.I know he wants to be with me, but I just have this horrible feeling that I can’t seem to escape.
